Mid-October is prime leaf-peeping in Wisconsin Dells.
Foliage.org: Are there areas, vistas, scenic lookouts or other destinations within Wisconsin Dells that are known for their uniquely beautiful autumn foliage displays?
The River Walk downtown, a new paved pedestrian walkway, provides vistas of the Wisconsin River and the honey-hued sandstone bluffs that line its shores. These are views not accessible for 75 years. There’s also the new zip line at the Wilderness Resort which takes you above the tree canopy of Lost Canyon.
Foliage.org: What are the local and regional roads or highways that are favorite scenic routes for Fall tourists?
Levee Road, part of the Wisconsin Rustic Road #49 network, takes you through lush woodlands and then out into the natural landscape of the Wisconsin River. It’s breathtaking.
Foliage.org: What festivals or other public events are taking place during autumn?
Wisconsin “Dells on Tap” is a regional favorite – a weekend dedicated to the area’s microbrewery movement.
Kilbourn CIty Live Music Festival and The Kids Activities and Artisan & Farmers Market is another very popular regional event in downtown Dells.
Foliage.org: Are there historic or cultural sites that are popular destinations for Fall foliage travelers? What are they?
A beautiful setting any time of the year, but especially in the fall, is the International Crane Foundation, the only place in the world where you can see all 15 species of cranes. The new open-air exhibit for the rare African cranes is worth the trip alone. Wollersheim Winery, a national historic site, was first selected for vineyards in the 1840s by the Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy. Today, winemaker Philippe Coquard, originally from the Beaujolais region of France, and wife Julie, who carries on the tradition begun by her father Robert Wollersheim, tend to the winter hardy French-American hybrid grapes and the lovely old buildings.
Foliage.org: What are some other popular tourist attractions for autumn travelers to Wisconsin Dells. What are some of the less well known, but much loved local attractions?
The attraction de rigueur is on the water — it’s a tour of the Wisconsin River. We have the largest fleet of WWII amphibious vehicles known as “Ducks.” You can also take a riverboat cruise or a jet boat adventure.
Foliage.org: Are there favorite destinations for history, literature, architecture buffs, or antique collectors? What are they?
One of the 19th century’s most renowned landscape photographers, H.H. Bennett, is credited with making Wisconsin Dells famous with his hauntingly beautiful photographs of the river and craggy bluffs and canyons. His studio in downtown Wisconsin Dells still stands today, now a Wisconsin Historical Site. The photo gallery is inspiring and a reminder of why visitors first came to the Dells – for the natural beauty.
Foliage.org: What are some favorite destinations or activities of families traveling during the Fall travel season?
While the fall colors are stunning, the indoor waterpark resorts are our biggest draw. After all, we are “The Waterpark Capital of the World! ®”
Foliage.org: What are some helpful resources for discovering local inns, bed and breakfasts, lodges, boutique hotels, and other local lodging and dining?
The official web site for the community is www.wisdells.com. We have so many options for lodging, from luxury spa villas in the woods to family waterpark resorts to rustic campsites. With more than 80 restaurants in less than 20 square miles, there’s great variety for the palate too.
