The end of summer in the Valley Forge area and Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, brings cooler temperatures, colorful leaves and festivals galore. It also signals the arrival of 12 family-friendly events to fall for this autumn.
Colonial music, storytelling, crafts, games and even a dog show is featured during the Founder’s Day Fall Festival at Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge National Historical Park.
Asher’s Chocolates, a retail store, in Souderton, PA often holds fall festival, with face painting, games for children, hot dogs and, one assumes, lots of chocolate.
Butler Avenue, in Ambler, comes alive with activity for its Oktoberfest.

Music, artists, crafters, sidewalk sales, hayrides and, of course, beer will make for a grand celebration. Visitors can go from experiencing German heritage to Pennsylvania German tradition at the Apple Butter Frolic at Mennonite Heritage Center, in Harleysville. Visitors can sample food and see demonstrations of antique farm equipment and folk craft, get spooked at Pennypacker Mills in Schwenksville listening to haunted stories.
Laerenswaert is a German phrase meaning “worth learning” and at Peter Wentz Farmstead, visitors can learn by doing the same tasks that kept the farm running back in the 18th century. The Laerenswaert Colonial Craft Fair takes place in Worcester. Along the same lines, the All Hallow’s Eve Fall Festival at Pennypacker Mills, in nearby Schwenksville offers guests a chance to shuck corn or crush apples with a cider press, the way farmers did a century ago.
For fresh fall produce, visit Willow Creek Orchards in Collegeville, PA any day and pick seasonal vegetables, herbs and pumpkins, right off the vine. Speaking of pumpkins, hayrides to the pumpkin patch are part of Freddy’s Fallfest at Freddy Hill Farms, in Lansdale. You may also get to enjoy pig races, pony rides, a farm zoo, funnel cake and more.

Wharton Esherick Museum- The Wharton Esherick Museum is a non-profit historic institution open to individual and group visits by appointment only. One-hour guided tours take place from March through December. The facility hosts a steady stream of groups — particularly students of architecture and the arts — and group tours can be scheduled for either weekdays or weekends. The mountaintop museum complex is located a short distance from the southwest boundary of Valley Forge National Historical Park off Exit 24 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The Schuylkill Expressway directly connects Turnpike Exit 24 to downtown Philadelphia about 25 miles to the east. The King of Prussia area adjacent to Valley Forge is densely developed with motels, convention centers, restaurants, and shopping facilities. It is home to the King of Prussia Mall? the largest shopping mall on the east coast.
