Foliage.org: What are the projected dates Durango, Colorado peak foliage season?
Depending on the weather conditions,peak leaf peeping could be early in October.
Are there areas, vistas, scenic lookouts or other destinations within Durango that are known for their uniquely beautiful autumn foliage displays?
The whole area is breathtaking, however I recommend a ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad–they go deep into the San Juan Wilderness and the colors are incredible. Soaring at Tree Top Adventures has a vibrant yellow “Aspen Alley” to soar through the tree tops.
What are the local and regional roads or highways that are favorite scenic routes for Fall tourists?
San Juan Skyway–use pull offs for great views! Do the entire 200+ mile loop through the mountains. If youdon’t have time for that, I recommend Hwy 550 from Durango to Silverton.

Are there historic or cultural sites that are popular destinations for Fall foliage travelers? What are they?
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Historic Third Avenue and Main Avenue. Sky Ute Convention Center also has a wealth of cultural history. When the Museum is a bit further along, that will be an incredible education, history and entertainment destination. Center for Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College is internationally known for its Native American studies and historical archives. Visit Durango.org for more events!
What are some other popular tourist attractions for autumn travelers to Durango. What are some of the less well known, but much loved local attractions?
Driving the San Juan Skyway, Fall festivals that celebrate local heritage and crops, D&SNGRR offers numerous Fall theme trains. Hiking is always popular however it is more popular when the colors change and the landscape is painted in brilliant harvest colors. The contrast of the first snow covering the mountain peaks, autumn leaves and still green meadows is breathtaking. Make sure you take in the Gunfight at the Diamond Belle Saloon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday night!

Animas Museum,Train Museum, walking tour of Main Avenue and Third Avenue. Many of our galleries offer museum-quality works to browse or buy.
What are some favorite destinations or activities of families traveling during the Fall travel season?
Hiking, biking, strolling Main Avenue, Soaring at Tree Top Adventures, riding the train, soccer tournaments in Durango. We offer a great value for families–take a weekend getaway and you always will find a festival or something going on. Durango has a great collection of galleries, performing and fine arts.

www.durango.org is loaded with travel and tourist information. KSUT radio also has a wealth of information on what is going on in the area.
Is there anything else you would like to tell visitors thinking about traveling to Durango for the Colorado fall foliage season?
You may come as a visitor, however you will leave as a local! We have so many things to do, see, eat and drink–you’ll find friendly locals, lots of sunshine, a relaxed way of life and incredible scenery. Please travel safely.
